Practicum Project
WPES Faculty recently participated in professional development aimed at improving teacher's mathematics teaching. The local RESA representative would like to collect data from classrooms. Approximately, 25 teachers were involved in the training. As my in-depth practicum project, I observed all teachers involved in the training and collected data about the teaching strategies used, the classroom climate, the physical environment of the classroom, and the teaching tools they used. When I completed observations, I shared my observations with them in a brief post-observation conference.
Through this 3-week long project, I learned that teachers generally are willing to discuss their teaching and critically reflect on ways to improve. Administrators can coach teachers when they are able to have such conversations. I hope that this can be a priority for me in a future leadership position.
Also, I learned that collecting data helps administrators make decisions. Below, I have tallyed the frequency of each indicator. This can provide a quick picture of the strategies that are used the most and the least among faculty.
